SUPPLEMENTAL INITIATIVES

WEEU participated in 7 different supplemental initiatives during the period, plus put 1 college student through our internship program, plus awarded one cash scholarship to a student involved with radio broadcasting at the station, plus worked with about 30 students on a regular basis, providing hands-on broadcast experience by means of our weekly WEEU Radio Voices talk-radio program.  (See below for further details on all topics and initiatives.)

  1. 5/10/07 – Jo Painter worked one on one with a high school student from Wilson High School who shadowed Jo throughout her entire shift from 3 to 5pm.  The student was interested in a career in broadcasting and wanted to get some first-hand knowledge as to what it is like to work in the business.
  2. 10/17/07 - Jo Painter worked one on one with a college student from Syracuse University who shadowed her during Jo’s entire shift from 3 to 5pm. This helped the student gather facts regarding a career in broadcasting.
  3. 1/7/08 – Charlie Adams worked one on one with a senior high school student from Schuylkill Valley High School to help the student gather facts regarding a career in broadcasting for a senior presentation.
  4. 1/24/08 – Jo Painter worked one on one with a high school student from Twin Valley High School who was interested in a career in broadcasting.  The student shadowed Jo throughout her entire broadcast shift from 3 to 5PM.
  5. 1/30/08 – Charlie Adams presented a media/radio/WEEU career presentation to 25 students at Penn State University, Berks Campus.
  6. 3/5/08 – Charlie Adams worked one on one with a student from Schuylkill Valley High School who was interested in a radio broadcasting career.  The student shadowed Charlie throughout his broadcast shift from 6 to 9AM.
  7. 3/12/08 – Jo Painter conducted three career-fair sessions at Penn State University, Berks Campus, for media students from regional high schools who were interested in radio broadcast careers. Each class had 4 students, for a total of 12 students.

INTERNSHIPS

WEEU works with college interns in the fall and winter semesters.  The interns have an opportunity to learn skills in a variety of radio positions from news-writing to promotions, sales and production.  The intern is typically in his or her senior year of college.  WEEU will work with the intern to help them meet the requirements necessary to get credits for the internship for the college if it offers such a program.  The internship usually requires approximately 30 hours a week.  WEEU also offers ‘shadow’ opportunities to students who seek them for school projects or career programs.  These are typically one day experiences shadowing a professional at the radio station.  These are unpaid internships.

During this period WEEU directed 1 college student through our internship program.  A female intern from Albright College, Reading, Pennsylvania, worked at WEEU Radio from mid-September/Fall, 2007, thru mid-December of 2007.  The intern learned all aspects of on-air work including news, board operation, commercial production, show hosting, and show production.

TRAINING PROGRAMS

During the time period of this report, (52 weeks), WEEU continued working with students from various regional high schools, providing them with a hands-on opportunity to participate in all aspects of the actual live talk-radio broadcast of a weekly show for and about teens. Known as “RADIO VOICES” this weekly, one-hour talk-radio show involves students with every aspect of the show including pre-production, selection of topics, board operation, panelist duties, interaction with listeners/callers, and follow through.  The opportunity provides a realistic training opportunity, allowing students to consider whether or not a career in this field might be something they want to pursue beyond high school.  (30 students)

SCHOLARSHIPS

In March of 2008 WEEU offered and awarded a $250.00 cash scholarship. The scholarship is available to one of the students who regularly participated in WEEU ’s weekly ‘RADIO VOICES’ talk-radio program for teens during the previous year.  By their involvement with the radio show and a through a review process with the show’s one adult host who administers the program, as well as the one overall VOICES radio and print adult administrator, candidates had to demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in broadcasting or communications, and needed to have  had a solid record of enthusiastic participation on WEEU’s Radio Voice Teen Panel Talk Show.

Narrative Statement

A review of WEEU’s outreach initiatives will demonstrate a firm commitment to interaction with the community in ways that include mentoring students, participating in job fairs, conducting broadcast learning seminars, offering internships and scholarships, and producing a weekly teen radio talk show for students from all school districts in the community.

WEEU is very pleased with the results of our weekly teen talk radio program, RADIO VOICES, as this effort has given the students actual hands-on experience with all aspects of producing and participating in a weekly radio talk show.  As an added bonus, the show is popular with teen and adult callers, and as such, it gives the students an opportunity to think on their feet as they field calls that generally center on a topic of the week.  There is generally a panel of three to four teens on the show each week.  Most participants are juniors and seniors in high school.

This sort of effort on the part of WEEU and its employees provides broad outreach and realistic opportunities to persons in the community who may be interested in a broadcasting career.
